Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put a photo on my website's home page?
First upload the photo to any section (article, photo, sponsor ...) of your website. After the photo(s) is uploaded you use the Home Page Builder to select the photo to place on your home page.

Note: You can also change the picture at the top of the left column.

How do I upload photos from my iPhone or smart cellphone?
You can upload a photo from your iPhone (or any device with an email capability) by emailing the photo to your website. To email a photo set the email To: as follows...

The To: format is abbreviation.type.word@infosports.com. Notice the dots (.) between the parts of the to email address.

Where...
abbreviation is your website abbreviation. For example if your site URL is www.infosports.com/pirates then the abbreviation is pirates.

type is set to the section of your website where you want to place the photo. Valid values are: player, fan, facility, action, fun, article, schedule, sponsor, bio.

word is a secret word of your choosing. The secret word is set in the admin section of your website. Email photo upload is turned off until you set a secret word.

Example: example.article.flower@infosports.com

When you compose your email the Subject line is used for the Title of your website entry. You can put additional information in the Body of the email. The body of the email is placed into the text of the entry.

You can also upload photos from other email programs. To use another email program set the type of email to 'text only' if you want to include text in the body of the post. MS Outlook defaults to HTML type formatting so you will need to change the Mail Format to 'Plain Text'. If you are uploading from an iPhone then no change is needed since the iPhone sends 'Plain Text' type emails.

When I click on Admin a box pops up asking for a user name and password. What do I enter?
Enter your site's abbreviation in the user name field (sometimes this is called something else but it is always the first entry). The second entry is the admin password. The admin password is the password that you used when you registered.

The admin password can be changed in the admin section of you site. The site abbreviation is part of your site's URL and can not be changed.

How much disk storage space am I allocated for my website?
InfoSports.com websites are allocated 20 Megabytes of disk space. This should be enough space for approximately 150 photos. The storage space used by text pages (article, sponsor, etc.) is negligible and is usually ignored.

I emailed a photo from my iPhone but it didn't show up on the site. How can I find out what happened to it?
Photo delivery is sometimes delayed. Usually though they arrive within a minute. There is an error log on your site which you can display which may or may not be helpful. The URL of your error log is www.infosports.com/yourabbreviation/admin/log.txt. The error log is in the admin area of your site so it will ask for the admin password before displaying it. The error log may not be present though if the system could not ascertain which site to deliver the photo to. If the error log is not present you might diagnose the problem by examining the To: field of the Sent emails on your phone.

How do I change the top of page area to display my own top of page image?
To place a top bar on your site simply upload your 978 pixel width image file (named topbar.gif, topbar.jpg, or topbar.png) with the file uploader. Note: The system tests to see if a topbar.xxx file is present. If so then it automatically places it at the top of page. To remove the image bar simply remove the file from your files directory. The image file must have a width of 978 pixels. The height can be of your choosing. A height around 120 pixels should be sufficient though.

Can I expand my website with pages written in HTML?
Yes. This feature was added on May 5, 2009. To use the feature create a text file and upload it to your files directory. Then use 'Add Miscellaneous' link on the bottom of the Miscellaneous Page to reference the uploaded file. The previously uploaded text file must have an extension of .txt, .htm or .html. The contents of the uploaded file is copied into the content area of the page. If you delete the miscellaneous page then you will also need to manually delete the previously uploaded file. As with articles, schedules ... you can archive the page.

Please note the 'Miscellaneous' link in the left column is turned off by default. You will need to turn on the link via the Home Page Builder admin selection to use this feature. There is a basic HTML manual here. Another way to use this feature would be to use Left Column Links to link to your created HTML page. With this method you could turn on Miscellaneous temporarily to get the URL of your page then turn it off.

What is the purpose of the 'Full Access' link displayed on mobile devices?
The feature allows you do view you full home page as well as to give you access to any uploaded files that you may have. If you click on a feature (e.g. photos) while on your full home page it will jump back to the mobile display since this feature has identical capabilities as the full website.

Will InfoSports.com send unsolicited email (SPAM) to me once I have created a website?
InfoSports.com does not send unsolicited email. Only in the rare instance when there is a problem with your website will you receive an email from InfoSports.com.

Note: Most free website providers SPAM you repeately with "press announcements" and advertisements.

How long does my website remain active?
InfoSports.com websites are active in 4 month increments. InfoSports.com websites which show no activity (are not updated) for a period of 4 or more months are removed. Newly created websites must be updated (an entry made to them) within the first week after you make the site.

Please note, the process that removes inactive websites is a semi-automatic process and an email removal notice is not sent to you prior to the removal of the site. Therefore to keep your website active you must make an entry (article, photo, etc) on your website at least once every 4 months.

Will there be any ads on my website?
Currently we do not plan on putting ads on your website. If we change this policy we will post an announcement, in the admin area of your website, 30 days prior to the start of ads.

I have forgotten my site URL and/or password. What do I do?
You can reset your password or find your website by clicking on the 'Find Your Website' and following the instructions from there.

Can I upload files other than photos. For example .pdf files?
Yes. The following file types are permitted: .pdf, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .doc, .htm, .html, and .xls. A generic file upload capability is included in the 'extended services' admin area of your website. Once a file is uploaded you can link to the file with the Left Column Links admin command. The maximum file size permitted is 2 Meg (bytes). An excellent, and free, .pdf file maker is available at http://www.pdfonline.com/.

Can I upload a wallpaper, and if so how do I reference it?
Yes. Use the admin file upload capability to upload your wallpaper file. The Site Colors admin function is used to reference the uploaded wallpaper. So, for example if you uploaded the wallpaper file floor.jpg then you would reference it with the URL /abbrev/files/floor.jpg where abbrev is your site abbreviation.

You can also pull a wallpaper from another site by entering its full URL (be sure to include http://) . For example http://www.example.com/floor.jpg.

What is Archive used for?
Archive allows you to move an entry out of the active area into the archive area. Once archived it can later be activated (moved back to the active area) if the need arises. An example of when you might use archive is when a calendar item has passed and is no longer relevant. You might archive it if there was information in the entry that you think may be useable in the future. Archive is available on all of the database selections.

What is the Admin - 'Clear Latest Additions Section on Home Page' used for?
On your home page you can optionally display a list of your last 5 entries to your page. The Latest Additions is defaulted off but you can enable it with the Home Page Builder Admin selection. If your Latest Additions is turned on then you can use this feature to clear the list.

Is my website listed in a InfoSports.com directory?
You pick the type of website (listed, unlisted or private) that you want when you create your website. Only listed sites are shown in the directory. You can change the type at any time in the admin area of your website.

Can I enter HTML code on my pages?
No (with the exception of Miscellaneous feature listed above). Two HTML like commands are provided though bold and italics. To enter bold print enclose the data in pseudo HTML as follows ... So bold would be coded Bolder stuff here. Italics is similar italics.
