Defensive Reads and Catcher's Backing Up Throws for Grounders

By: Bear

Dear Tony

For grounders, they are 'similar' to single but with exceptions as noted.

After 'reading' the situation, the catcher
breaks for the area behind first base
to 'back up' throws under the following.

Grounder to Left side of Inf w/ No Runners on base.
Grounder to left side of Inf w/ Runner on 3rd.
Grounder to middle of Inf w/ No Runners on base.
Grounder to middle of Inf w/ Runner on 3rd.

A catcher must 'read' and then trail hitter at 1b (for throw from 2b/1b - e.g Pitcher backs up between 1b and Home).
Grounder to right side if Inf w/ No Runners on base.
Grounder to right side of Inf / Runner on 3rd
and two outs.

A catcher must 'read' and 'stay' around
the plate for the following:
Grounder to left side of Inf w/ Runner on 1b.
Grounder to left side of Inf w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.
Grounder to middle of Inf w/ Runner on 1b.
Grounder to middle of Inf w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.
Grounder to right side of Inf w/ Runner on 1b.
Ground to right side of Inf w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.
Grounder to right side of Inf / Runner on 3rd
and less than two outs.

Once again, try to chart how
you want your defensive alignments
for other situations:

cheers
Bear
