travel and/or select teams
By: KathyBean,
Do you also think all children should be taught academics at the same pace? Advanced/gifted students learning at the same pace as students with average abilities and learning disabilities? When that happens, you not only waste an incredible amount of human potential, you also BORE those kids by not challenging them...and what do most kids do when they become bored and unchallenged by life? They look for "other challenges" to make their lives exciting...drugs, vandalism, sex, crime...
Athletics are the same...you have children with all levels of abilities...from the advanced/gifted to the athletically challenged. Should they be treated the same and taught at the same pace? Should those athletically advanced/gifted children be given the chance to see how far they can progress in a different, more challenging and competitive program?....you betcha', because most of the WANT to be challenged in their sport...they are BORED with the constraints of LL and other rec leagues. They WANT to play competitively. Please don't assume that because my son plays travel/select baseball that I'm pushing him or robbing him of his childhood...on the contrary...I'm giving him the OPPORTUNITY to reach his goals in his sport...he loves it and it's what makes HIM happy.
