Expensive Select Team Plays Coach's Boy Ball
By: SeadogBaseball Nut,
Unfortunately you are so wrong about what I know about travel ball. I have coached many travelling teams and my first priority is player developement. That my friend is what a coach does, he is there to teach. At 9 yrs old at 15-16 yrs old the age of my kids my job as a coach is to teach the game of baseball and maybe some of lifes lessons along the way.
It is all YOUTH baseball, not one of them is an adult , and not one of them has all of there life skills they need even at 18.I do not run a social club I run a baseball team and my goal is to get EACH of my players ready to move on to the next level of ball that they want to pursue.Teach sound fundamental baseball, teach teamwork, teach hard work and dedication and teach sacrifice and winning will take care of itself.
Too many parents and coaches get to caught up in the score and forget about the results.Thats where the egos are.I would like my team to win all there games because obviously winning is more fun than losing, but I do not try to win at the expense of my players.
Player development is why you have your kid play travel ball isn't it? The stronger the competition the better the player right?Travel coaches are typically more knowledgeable so they also help with player developement, Right?Travel teams play a more difficult schedule more games and travelling involved right? The goal is still to make each player a better player. If the only goal is winning then then someone has there priorities mixed up.
Both my sons have played rec ball and travel ball.I have coached both travel ball and rec ball.I know the difference, and it is not winning it is about the level of competition. If all you care about is winning or having your son play on a winning team then you again emphasize the differences between you and I.
My 15 yr old played on a championship team that competed on a national level and he had a miserable experience even though they won the majority of their games. The coach did little or no teaching and his only concern was winning the hardware. He played almost every inning yet saw some players not step foot on the field during several tournaments because the coach just wanted to win.
Not my brand of baseball or coaching.
I think we just need to agree to disagree.
